5 Email Marketing Rookie Mistakes
Whether you're a seasoned marketer or just starting out, avoiding rookie mistakes is imperative to ensuring your efforts yield the desired results.
Let’s not waste time scrambling and get into it:
Lack of clear goals and neglecting target audience research
Too long subject lines and preview texts
Email address or From Name is "noreply"
Email contains too many Calls to Action (CTAs)
Email is too long
Now, let’s dig a bit deeper into each one.
Lack of clear goals and neglecting target audience research
Setting clear and measurable marketing goals is crucial for guiding your efforts and determining the success of your campaigns. For example, instead of aiming to “increase sales”, specify your goal like “achieve 20% increase in sales revenue within the next quarter”.
Without specific objectives, it's challenging to know whether your marketing initiatives are effective or if you're spinning your wheels.
To create marketing campaigns that resonate and drive meaningful engagement you need to fully understand your target audience. This means not relying on assumptions, but conducting thorough research to uncover these insights. (Mailchimp 2023.)
Subject line too long
A subject line is considered too long if it has more than 9 words or 60 characters. I would also like to highlight the mistake of overhyping your subject lines, thus making them sound less trustworthy. Watch out for that as well!
Email address or From Name is "noreply"
For heaven's sake, I beg you not to use a generic email "from name" such as "admin" or "noreply". We’re all human beings and we want to interact with people, not mailboxes.
Email contains too many Calls to Action (CTAs)
You don’t want to crowd your email with too many actions that you want your subscriber to do, because you risk losing them and pushing them to do nothing. It is always better to determine a main action that you want your subscribers to do and adjust your CTAs according to that.
Email is too long
When you are building an email campaign keep in mind that subscribers won’t take 10 minutes of their day to read the whole lot of text and news you wrote for them. They will scan the email and if you manage to spark their interest, they will click that CTA and follow your lead.
Conclusion
To sum it up: do your audience and goals research before you start with email marketing. Also, familiarize yourself with the basic email marketing copy and design principles or reach out to email marketing professionals and let them do their work.
